Abstract

This research article aimed to analyze and compare the roles of Bu Check Tian in the politics and government in different genres of contemporary literature based on the literary texts of The Thai Translation of the Chinese Annals of Sui Thang (Volumes 4-5: Bu Check Tian) and Si Kang (“Bu Check Tian: A Cruel Queen” Episode) as well as on the DVD Chinese series of “Bu Check Tian: Chom Nang NeuPhaendin (The Shadow of Empress Wu)” and “The Empress of China”. The findings revealed that the roles of Bu Check Tian in the literary texts were portrayed to be more negative than positive towards the Tang Dynasty, the courtesans, the nation and the people. However, it was found that the drama series portrayed the roles of Bu Check Tian to be more positive than negative towards the Tang Dynasty, the courtesans, the nation and the people. This was possibly because the literary texts were composed in
the ancient time and invariably by male writers. Living in a patriarchal
society, the Chinese people in the old days denied Bu Check Tian’s political and governmental capabilities. On the contrary, the writers of the Chinese drama series were of the contemporary period, and thus more ready to
acknowledge the women’s rights, intellect, knowledge and ability derived from equal opportunities in education between men and women in today’s world.
