The Memory of Bind

Abstract

The objective of project, The Memory of Bind, is to present the creative work of the textile art that was caused by the relationship among people in the researcher’s family and to learn about the bind since the grandmother’s generation. In those days, my grandmother bound up baby cradles and hammocks to sell for extra income and that aroused my interest in their patterns to learn about binding and knitting techniques since my childhood. To see my grandmother did the knitting inspired me to bring out the techniques to create art works. Because of the loss of my beloved grandmother, I brought materials to be a substitute for an individual as a memory record and to express the emotion I want to express. I brought many kinds of ropes to tie and knit with the personal things of my grandmother such as clothes, sarongs, Khit pillows, loom, weaving beater, yarns pinning wheel, yarn spinning stick, rice box (Kratib) and dipper. These objects were bonded to the path of my grandmother’s life. Binding those objects into the artwork shows the relationship between my grandmother and me and my various feeling towards her love, warmth, path of life and living of people in the family.

            I would like the audiences to appreciate my emotions. The value of the artwork would make them to see the aesthetic beauty of the woven patterns that I have created. Also, it can reflect the wisdom of villagers and the way of life in the society that is different from the city through binding method in various ways.

            I dedicated my strength and mind to create ‘The Memory ofBind’ as the artwork combining from my whole memories towards my grandmother. It is reminiscence of parents to show that my grandmother is still always in my heart. I hopefully expect my creative work, The Memory ofBind, could get the audiences access into my emotions that I want to express and to perceive the story of their lives as well as the affection among people in the family through bind and knitting
