Mongserng Dance of the Kula Ethnic in Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study 1) the historical background of Mongserng Dance; and 2) compositions, patterns and steps of the dance which are the identical uniqueness of Mongserng Dance of the Kula Ethic, in Non YaiVillange, Kor-e Sub-district, KhuangNai District, UbonRatchathani Province. The qualitative research methodology was done by implementing an interview and an observation form as research instruments for the study. To collect the data; and documentary review and field-study were applied to obtain information from the local informants who were communities’ leaders, the local philosophers, folk dancers, musician and villagers. The results of the research were as follows.

1. 1. Mongserng Dance is a kind of folk dance adapted from Fong Jerng or a kind of sward dance and a fighting dance called Ram Muay of Tai Yai people in order to entertain the villagers. The steps of dance were focused on delicate and fineness gestures as well as the performing of the musicians who were playing cymbals and drums. The Kula ethnic is an outstanding source of this kind of art that has been remained and conserved up to present.
