Abstract
Laotian Vieng music is an identity part of the Laotian Vieng
community which represent their culture tradition and ancient beliefs
which plays an important role in today’s Laotian Vieng community. The
objectives of this research are: 1) To study the music of the Laotian Vieng
community at Tambon Don KhaAmphur U-Thong SuphanBuri province
2) To study the succession andconservation of Laotian Viengmusicat
Tambon Don KhaAmphur U-Thong SuphanBuri province. The research
discovered that the Laotian Vieng music of Tambon Don KhaAmphur
U-Thong SuphanBuriprovinceoriginated from folk music similar to
Isarn music but with khaen mouth organ as the core musical instrument.
The Laotian Vieng community has passed down their music which was
influenced by external social and cultural factors and became popular with
friends of the younger generation. However the lack of support from local
agency decreased the number of experts in Laotian Vieng music which
eventually faded away with time. The ritual is typical of the “Blue
Ghost” ritual which they the ancient Laotians believed could cure
diseases similar with spiritual possession in worship of ancestors.
The conservation and succession of the Laotian Vieng music of
of Tambon Don KhaAmphur U-Thong SuphanBuri province passed on from
generation to generation via teaching word-of-mouth among relatives and
through various activities / musical performances shows / exhibitions for
tourists to see and enjoy.
