Error Analysis of an English Descriptive Essay: A Classroom Research Project in a Diverse Setting of Second-Year Weekend Students, Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University

Abstract
This study reports grammatical errors in a timed and accumulativetranslation-skill quiz of a picture description. A picture accompanied by
selected pieces of music was used in lieu of regular texts for translation
to elicit understanding and writing from the sample group which included
36 second-year English weekend students enrolling in the course English
Translation 1, semester 2/2013. The sample group contained a diversity of
ethnic backgrounds, genders, ages, and individual durations of exposure to
English. The data was analyzed using Error Analysis, and 34 pieces of English
work written by native speakers of Thai revealed 281 errors divided into (1)
Fragments and Runs-on: 140 times (49.82%); (2) The Sense of Existence
(the use of has/have against there is/there are): 43 times (15.30%); (3) Other
Element Drops and Excess Elements: 49 times (17.44%); and (4) Other
Linguistic Productions: (the issue of coherence, confusion, and Thai structures
dominating): 49 times (17.44%).
