A Comparative Study of the Symbolic Meanings of Birds in the Jatakas and in Foreign Documents

Abstract
This article aims to compare the symbolic meanings of birds in documents concerning symbols written or compiled by foreigners to the symbolic meanings of birds in 27 Jataka tales. Semiology was used for analysis. The results showed that the symbolic meanings of birds most frequently found in the documents were soul, messengers between
heaven and earth, and eternal life. Symbolic meanings of birds from their remarkable
attributes depicted in Jataka tales were wisdom, goodness, and vigilance. The symbolic
meanings of birds from Jatakas were consistent with the symbolic meanings of birds from
documents, which was found only once. The finding can be explained by connotative
meaning because most of the documents concerning signs and symbols were collected by
foreigners who have different social and cultural backgrounds from those found in the Jataka
tales. If Thais wish to know the symbolic meanings of the words found in Thai culture,they
are advised to look for the symbols unique to Thai society so that they can acquire a unique
meaning well understood among Thais.
