The View of Post-Modern Phenomena through Angkarn Kalayanapong’s Poem

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate the post-modern issue found in the poem written by Angkarn Kalayanapong; the winner of the Southeast Asian Writers Award (S.E.A Write Award) in 1976 and the national artist of Thailand in the field of literature in 1989. The following poems were studied : 1) the Angkarn Kalayanapong’s poem publicized in 1964, 2) Lan Nam Phu Kradueng; publicized in 1969, 3) Bangkok Keaw Kam Suan or Journey to Nakhon Si Thammarat; publicized in 1978, and 4) Panitan Kawee (Poets’ determination); publicized in 1986. To the findings, there are four types of post-modern phenomena which are : 1) no prosody patterns, 2) the combination of different characters of postmodern-found in the works by Angkarn Kalayanapong. This implies the social notion in the poem and the confrontation of old versus modern notion. Moreover, it shows that the poem is a part of preserving the traditional practices, while it also crosses the line from the old to the modern notion. This showed that the social standards were varied through the modern technology. Notwithstanding, the poem still plays crucial roles which are : to reflect the social images, to present the poets’ ideology, to engender the mutual senses in society and to be as the media describing the important social issues and stories.
