THE NEW UPCYCLING DESIGNS OF USING USED VINYL CANVAS TO CREATE NEW ENVIRONMENT IN LIMITED SPACE

Abstract

Nowadays, a large number of vinyl canvas materials are widely used. However, when the life cycle ends, the vinyl canvas is degraded and becomes waste, which is considered a factor reflecting urban health problems. According to the studies, the largest proportion of plastic waste comes from single-use packages (2.331 million tons a year), generating much waste. Recognizing the reusable vinyl canvas properties, the researcher searched for upcycling guidelines using artistic and scientific knowledge to create new knowledge and discover the properties of a material that endures under all weather conditions without changing its shape. This material is insect-resistant, flexible, unique, and displays time marks. To emphasize the thermal processes, the researcher found that temperatures between 120°C - 190°C can melt plastic and build durability of the material. This upcycling material has better quality than the original one, and it serves the needs of millennials who love green products and prefer relaxing at home. The product was designed to serve practical purposes and raise awareness. There are two approaches that match the material properties: 1) to replace materials such as rubber and wooden tiles 2) for lifestyle furniture products in the form of the vertical garden chair, multifunction mounted board, relaxing corners, or modular home decorations, which can create an atmosphere promoting the responsibility for nature.

    The knowledge from this study is to create reused designs with industrial technology to meet the requirements of consumers for niche markets. In addition, reducing plastic waste from vinyl canvas can remind the impact reduction to environmental concepts.
