Abstract

Background and Objectives: The 4th International Symposium on Creative Fine Arts (ISCFA) 2023 serves as a platform for fostering creative innovations that respond to community needs and promote sustainable education systems. This paper presents the inspiration behind the creation of a song with a jazz music flavor through the development of harmonic progressions and chord progressions to create diversity. The study reflects an integration of popular music knowledge with specialized musical elements, aiming to create new compositions that respond to the changing contemporary music scene.

Methods: This academic article adopts a musicological approach, emphasizing the analysis and creative synthesis of musical elements that characterize both popular music and jazz. The study examines melodic structures, chord progressions, harmonic textures, and rhythmic components, blending them to craft a distinctive musical composition.

Key Findings: This academic article identifies three key aspects of integrating pop and jazz music in composition: (1) the use of harmonic progressions that support the melody by incorporating out-of-key harmonies while maintaining chord tones that seamlessly align with the key signature; (2) the application of borrowed chords, primarily from parallel keys, to enrich harmonic diversity; and (3) the structuring of instrumental improvisation sections within the composition.

Implications of the Study: This article proposes a creative approach to pop-jazz composition that is melodically appealing, structurally accessible, and easy to listen to. At the same time, it retains the essence of jazz music by developing chord progressions with color and diverse harmonies.

Conclusions and Future Research: This academic article highlights the balanced integration of pop and jazz elements in music composition. Future research in this area may explore more complex and contemporary approaches to pop-jazz fusion, aligning with the rapidly evolving landscape of the music industry.
