Abstract
This research article aimed to study and understand the deconstruction of the narrative ‘Chao Anuwong’ and its political implication as found in the Lao literature ‘Tao Laokhum’ (royal prince of the dynasty). The concept of Deconstruction was used in the study. Prince Anuwong was the Lao monarch who played a very important political role. He fought for independence from Siam. The following were found in the study. 1) Deconstruction was found in the literary types through interfusing the historical narratives, poems, novels and folk tales. The aim was to neutralize the binary opposition of the cultural hierarchy and to use the process as the strategy for the political struggle against the Siamese domination. Political implications were needed because it was impossible to engage in an open struggle. 2) Anuwong’s life events were deconstructed to imply that politically, he wanted to reclaim his status and dignity from Siam and to create his own image as a leading figure who wanted to establish a reconciliation among the Laotians. 3) Tao Laokhum was deconstructed to imply the political significance of the national ideology. That was created by featuring him in Anuwong’s image.
In addition, Anuwong’s name was used to signify domination, political struggle and bargain of people living on both banks of the Mekong River. It can be concluded that the narrative of Prince Anuwong was dynamic and apparently used as the cultural politics apparatus.
