Structure and Language Root of Lao Family Names

Abstract

Abstract

This research is a part of research namely Lao’s family names. The aim is to explain the family names structure and language source. This is a qualitative research in linguistics. The data are 1,102 names collected by accidental sampling on Lao’s family name of who have living in Vientiane capital city. The framework of word structure is adapted to analyze the family name’s structure while the language family framework is used to find theits language source. The finding will be presented by descriptive analysis as well as the quantitative data will be supported.

The research result was found that there are 3 structure categories: one-word, two-words, and three-words. The two-words structure is the most one prominently. All one-word structures borrowed from other source languages especially Vietnamese. The two/three-structures mostly being in Laotian or mixing between Laotian and Pali-Sanskrit.

In terms of language source was found that there are 7 languages: Laotian, Pali-Sanskrit, Vietnamese, Hmong, Chinese, Korean, and French. Laotian and Pali-Sanskrit sources have similar numbers as well as they outnumber other languages. This phenomenon implies that in the present time Laos have been cross-cultural marriage with foreigner men or there are foreigners have moved into Vientiane.
