A phonological Comparison of Tai Dialects in Bueng kan Province

Abstract
The objective of this research was to comparatively study the phonological structure of Tai dialect in Bueng Kan including, Lao in Si Wilai, Phuan in Muang Bueng Kan, Yo in Seka, and Phu Tai in Phon Charoen, Bueng Kan Province. The instrument used for collecting data was to interview informants with basic words. The collected data was analyzed to find out consonant phonemes and vowel phonemes by using minimal pairs. William J. Gadney’s tone box was used to analyze tone phonemes. The study’s findings reveal that the phonological structure of Tai dialect in Bueng Kan Province including, Lao, Phuan, Yo, and Phu Tai consists of 20 consonant phonemes, 21 vowel phonemes, 5 and 6 tonal phonemes. The tone was found in two and three-way split. There were only slight differences in each tone phonemes in terms of phonetics.
