บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาบทสวดโองการในภาคใต้ ในประเด็นบทบาทและความสำคัญของบทสวดโองการภาคใต้ โดยเก็บข้อมูลบทสวดโองการจำนวน 30 โองการ แบ่งเป็นบทสวดโองการที่บันทึกในหนังสือบุด 8 โองการ ที่บันทึกสมุดฝรั่งจำนวน 19 โองการ และที่จัดพิมพ์รวมเล่ม 3 โองการ แล้วสรุปผลด้วยวิธีการพรรณนาวิเคราะห์
ผลการวิจัยสรุปว่าบทสวดโองการในภาคใต้ ได้แสดงให้เห็นบทบาทด้านการใช้เป็นข้อตกลงร่วมกันทางสังคมที่คนในชุมชนปฏิบัติสืบทอดต่อกันมา ขณะเดียวกันบทสวดโองการได้สะท้อนให้เห็นคติและแสดงความคิดความเชื่อเรื่องต่าง ๆ โดยเฉพาะการสวดเพื่ออัญเชิญสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ทางศาสนา เทพเจ้า ครู ฤาษี และหัวข้อหลักธรรมของพุทธศาสนาให้มาป้องกันภัยและให้มาช่วยเหลือ นอกจากนี้บทสวดโองการได้แสดงให้เห็นการผสมผสานความเชื่อดั้งเดิมกับพุทธศาสนา โดยเฉพาะคติเกี่ยวกับพระพุทธเจ้าปราบฤทธิ์พระภูมิ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นการปรับเปลี่ยนคติความเชื่อ และแนวคิดการบรรลุธรรมทางพุทธศาสนา นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าการสืบทอดบทสวดโองการมีการสืบทอด 3 แบบ ได้แก่ การสืบทอดจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น ทั้งทางสายเลือดและมิใช่สายเลือดแต่เป็นลูกศิษย์ที่สนใจ การสืบทอดในพิธีกรรมต่าง พบว่าบางโองการถูกใช้จำเพาะพิธีกรรมเท่านั้น และการสืบทอดด้วยการพิมพ์เผยแพร่ พบว่าส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นเนื้อหาที่ได้มาจากวัดมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อการจัดพิมพ์มาบำรุงศาสนา
