This research focuses Teochiu Chinese opera literature today. It is aimed at investigating the literature and type of Chinese literature used to perform Teochiu Chinese opera in Thailand and analyzing the maintenance of the Chinese identity and collective memory. Data are collected from in-depth interviews with three traditional Chinese opera groups, namely Sing Dong Zhia Soong Hia, Wai Yong Hong, and Lao Sa Zhia. Results of the study indicate that all of these three Chinese opera groups use Chinese literature in their performance of traditional Chinese opera. The Chinese literature used to perform Chinese opera can be classified by their contents into two categories: historical records and annals; and Teochiu folktales. An adaption of many Teochiu folktales into Chinese opera performances today shows that there is an effort to maintain Teochiu identity by means of reproduction from memory regarding Teochiu literature, which is jointly perceived by the audience and gives them a feeling of unity. Teochiu people have produced their past through their collective memory, which is preservation of Teochiu Chinese opera as a performance art that connects all activities of Teochiu people.
