งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาภาพแทนของตัวละครหุ่นยนต์จากนิยายเรื่อง R 62 โก โนะ ฮะท์ซุเมะอิ (การค้นพบหมายเลข R 62) ของอะเบะ โคโบ นักเขียนชาวญี่ปุ่นซึ่งตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกใน ค.ศ. 1953 จากการศึกษาสามารถแบ่งภาพแทนของหุ่นยนต์ออกได้สามข้อ ข้อแรกหุ่นยนต์เป็นภาพแทนของอิทธิพลจากสหรัฐอเมริกา ที่มีต่อญี่ปุ่นช่วงหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง ข้อสองหุ่นยนต์เป็นภาพแทนของมนุษย์ ที่ตกอยู่ใต้อิทธิพลของเทคโนโลยี ซึ่งเป็นผลจากการลงทุนพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ ของรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นเพื่อพัฒนาประเทศ และข้อสามหุ่นยนต์เป็นภาพแทนความบกพร่องของเทคโนโลยี เนื่องจากฝั่งแรงงานต้องการให้มีการจ้างงาน แต่นายทุนกลับเลือกสนับสนุนการพัฒนาหุ่นยนต์และเครื่องจักรเพื่อลดการจ้างงาน ในขณะที่หุ่นยนต์ไม่ได้มีบทบาทในการช่วยเหลือทั้งแรงงานและนายจ้าง แต่กลับพยายามควบคุมการทำงานของแรงงาน และยังเป็นเหตุให้นายจ้างถึงแก่ความตาย ดังนั้นการศึกษาภาพแทนของหุ่นยนต์จึงช่วยให้เห็นบทบาทของเทคโนโลยี และสภาพสังคมของญี่ปุ่นในช่วงฟื้นฟูประเทศหลังสิ้นสุดสงครามโลกครั้งที่สองผ่านตัวบทวรรณกรรม
