Police Roles and Narcotics in Khlong Tan District, Bangkok

Abstract

This study titled “Police Roles and Narcotics in Khlong Tan District, Bangkok” aims to (1) study the roles of the police and drug problems in Khlong Tan District, Bangkok, (2) to study the problems and obstacles in police operations and drugs in Khlong Tan District, Bangkok, and (3) to find guidelines for the adjustments in police roles and drugs in Khlong Tan District, Bangkok. This study is a qualitative research conducted by interviewing the people selected by purposive sampling. A total of 15 key informants were purposively selected from the police in administration positions, including the superintendent, deputy superintendent for crime suppression, deputy superintendent for investigation, head of the inquiry section, crime suppression inspector, and investigation inspector. The study found that police roles are divided into 3 aspects: 1) drug control, 2) drug suppression, and 3) drug rehabilitation. The problem and obstacle the police encounter is about the cooperation of parents, as parents are concerned that their children will have a criminal record and thus are not cooperative in sending drug users or drug addicts in for rehabilitation.
