Plato’s Apology and the Solution for the Decline of Democracy in the 21st Century
A Proposal to Larry Diamond’s “Breaking out of Democratic Slump”
Keywords:
democracy, Apology, Plato, SocratesAbstract
This article was a thought experiment on the solution of democratic decline in the 21st century according to Larry Diamond’s article “Breaking out of Democratic Slump.” The declining of democracy was revolving around the dissolution of three core democratic premises: political pluralism, civil liberty, and rule of law. However, the author found that the argument for the 21st century democracy is analogously like the Athenian Democracy portraited in Plato’s Apology. Thus, should ones try to find the solutions to present democracy, they could encounter their answer in reading Socrates arguments within this renowned text.
