บทคัดย่อ
บทความวิจัยชิ้นนี้วางอยู่บนข้อเสนอหลักใน 2 ประเด็น ประเด็นที่หนึ่งคือความคิดทางการเมืองเรื่องรูปแบบการปกครองแบบผสมในสมัยคลาสสิกของโลกตะวันตกไม่ได้มีเอกภาพเป็นหนึ่งเดียว หากแต่ประกอบไปด้วยข้อถกเถียงภายในที่นำไปสู่จารีตสองแบบเกี่ยวกับการปกครองแบบผสม คือจารีตแบบเพลโต-อาริสโตเติลและจารีตแบบโพลีเบียส ประเด็นที่สองคือความแตกต่างกันของกรอบคิดเรื่องการปกครองแบบผสมทั้งสองแบบของ โพลีเบียสและซิเซโรนั้น แท้จริงแล้วต่างเป็นส่วนประกอบที่คอยเติมเต็มซึ่งกันและกัน กล่าวอีกนัยหนึ่งคือการปกครองแบบผสมที่ทำงานได้จริงจำเป็นจะต้องมีทั้งส่วนที่สร้างความผสมกลมกลืนทางการเมืองระหว่างพลังทางสังคมที่เป็นจริงกลุ่มต่าง ๆ แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็จะต้องประกอบไปด้วยสถาบันทางการเมืองที่คอยจัดวางความขัดแย้งและผลประโยชน์ส่วนตัวของฝักฝ่ายทางการเมืองต่าง ๆ ด้วยเช่นกัน
