Main Article Content
Abstract
The objectives of this research were 1) to examine the design concept of skill practice kit of art
composition concept in teaching photography for non-art students; 2) to examine the outcomes of
photography works with the art composition concept. This experimental research examined the outcome of
learning in photography class of 22 undergraduate students of Bangkok University International College
majoring in business administration, marketing, tourism and hotel management, who enrolled in the course
on the Principles of Photography. The research instruments included a skill test of art composition concept,
and an evaluation form. The statistical analysis involved percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The
results indicated that the "Skill Practice Kit of Art Composition Concept” removes the students’ anxiety of
having no art background and being unable to understand the art composition. Students understood more
about art composition. Based on the evaluation, 52.17 % of students thought about the art composition
that the Viewpoint was easiest to understand, followed by an equal 47.82 % for each of the Leading Lines,
Framing, and Cropping. The art composition most difficult to understand was the Depth as reported by
26.00 % of students followed by the Mixing Experimentation as reported by 21.7 % of them. The test of
photography works of students suggested that they were able to correctly explain and applied the art
composition concept for the Mixing Experimentation with the highest score for 81.81 %, followed by the
Leading Lines for 64.77 %, and the Rule of Thirds for 61.36 %. The lowest score was 40.90 % for the Depth,
Therefore the concept of Mixing Experimentation is commonly and accurately applied by students,
followed by the Leading Lines, and the Rule of Thirds, respectively. The proposed skill practice kit and
concept can guide the teaching of art composition for the non-art students as they can accurately
understand the basic elements of arts. The kit is easy and quick to understand and can be effectively
applied in the daily life.
