Abstract

This article is a part of the doctoral thesis entitled “Urban Environmental Experiences of Cyclists and their Decision on Utility Cycling”, the major objective is to have better understandings about cyclists’ experiences on cycling in small cities by using Nan municipality as a case study.  Concept of experience design was applied as theoretical framework of this research.  Several qualitative research methods including semi-structured in-depth interview, focus group discussion, and observation were conducted to gain insight into urban cyclists’ perspectives.  Samples were selected to cover three different groups: (1) pure utilitarian cyclists, (2) pure leisure cyclists, and (3) all-around cyclists.  The findings show that urban cyclists had two types in cycling that were (1) physical experiences, that occurred when urban elements affect cyclists’ perceptions of competence, security, and stimulation (enjoyment and pleasure), and (2) meaning experiences that related to how cyclists coped with insecurity and had sense of community belonging.  It is useful for urban designers and planners to apply the concept of experience design to promote cycling and develop urban environment that enriches cyclists’ pleasant and meaningful experiences. Both physical and meaning experiences should be considered as well as cyclists’ psychological needs.
