Definitions, characteristics, and trends in the study of urban vernacular architecture: A case study of Chiang Mai

Abstract

        This study aims to explore and understand the definitions, characteristics, and trends in studying urban vernacular architecture, particularly in Chiang Mai, which holds significant cultural and architectural importance. The research begins with a literature review to collect and analyze definitions and characteristics of urban vernacular architecture from various sources, as well as to identify key trends in this field. The findings reveal that the urban vernacular architecture of Chiang Mai is not just a product of the past but a living testament to the community's commitment to its preservation. It is characterized by the application of traditional construction forms and techniques, a reflection of local culture, materials, and climate, the integration of local traditions with environmental considerations, the connection of local culture and community creativity, and the blending of vernacular concepts with modern design. These distinctive features are a result of the community's active involvement in the conservation and restoration efforts, demonstrating their deep connection to their cultural heritage. This article highlights the importance of studying urban vernacular architecture in preserving culture and promoting sustainable urban development. It also provides clear recommendations for future research and policy development in conserving Chiang Mai's urban vernacular architecture to benefit the community and the public.
