Chinese temples in the memories of Chinese Thai people in Korat town

Abstract

        This article explores the narratives and memory experiences of Thai Chinese individuals residing in the urban community of Korat (or Nakhon Ratchasima Old Town), focusing on the relationship between Chinese shrines, beliefs, faith, and the community's way of life amidst the changing currents of urbanization. The study applies the concept of Place memory to understand the role of Chinese shrines as cultural spaces that reflect social memory, shared identity, and the connection between the past and present. The research methodology involves observation and in-depth interviews with 10 purposively selected participants who are users of the shrine spaces and individuals with direct experiences related to the shrines. Narratives from the participants reveal the evolving roles of the shrines, transitioning from sacred spaces symbolizing identity and faith to multifunctional spaces encompassing social and economic dimensions. These roles include daily activities, social gatherings, and their significance as prominent tourist destinations in the city. Notably, four Chinese shrines in Korat serve as cultural memory hubs and symbolic spaces, interconnected through ritual practices and social bonds according to linguistic groups. This study highlights that Chinese shrines not only function as spiritual centers but also as spaces that preserve Place memory, bridging communities with their cultural roots and reflecting the dynamic adaptation of these spaces within the contemporary urban context.
