4 Kings I & II Crime Genre, Defeat and Straight Men of Chao Phraya River Basin

Abstract
This article analyses the films 4 Kings (2021) and 4 Kings II (2023) through the lens of film genre theory. By examining the conventions and formulas that define a particular genre, elements to analyse are: 1) Internal elements such as atmosphere, story and characters 2) Contexts which is ideology. This study finds that 4 Kings aligns more closely with the crime genre's "brother in arms" subgenre rather than the traditional gangster film. Consequently, the films prioritize themes of friendship among the lower class over the typical fascination with wealth and organized crime. This shift results in characters who embody the ideals of the underdog, reflecting a marginalized masculinity.
