Ceramic Glaze Innovation: Elevating Local Materials from the Mun River Basin to Creative Works and Product Development

Abstract

This research aims to (1) study the history of Mun River Basin clay and ceramic glazes, (2) analyze and synthesize information for the experimental development of ceramic glaze formulas from Mun River Basin clay, and (3) develop a ceramic glaze from Mun River Basin clay that is suitable for creative works and product design. The primary raw materials used include Dan Kwian clay, riverbank silt (Nual Din), and soda feldspar. This research involved reviewing relevant literature and conducting experiments based on the Triaxial Blend theory to determine the optimal composition. The research process consisted of raw material preparation, testing glaze formula ratios, and analyzing the properties of the glaze after firing at temperatures between 1,000-1,250°C in gas kilns.

The results showed that (1) a comprehensive understanding of the history and unique characteristics of Mun River Basin clay and ceramic glazes was achieved, (2) synthesized glaze formulas were successfully developed, with the optimal results found in the 35th variation of both Formula 1 and Formula 2, and (3) the developed glaze formulas were suitable for practical application and could be utilized in pottery production to enhance the economic value of the Dan Kwian community. Furthermore, this research contributes to the elevation of local materials into innovative applications in art and product design.
