มูลเหตุแห่งการเปลี่ยนพระราชหฤทัยของพระเจ้าอโศกมหาราช สู่การปกครองที่ทรงธรรรม

บทคัดย่อ

            บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสืบค้นมูลเหตุแห่งการเปลี่ยนพระราชหฤทัยของพระเจ้าอโศกมหาราชมาสู่การปกครองที่ทรงธรรม โดยการศึกษาข้อมูลสนับสนุนมูลเหตุที่ทรงเปลี่ยนพระราชหฤทัยตามที่ปรากฎในคัมภีร์ในทางพระพุทธศาสนาอรรถกถา ฎีกา รวมถึงผลงานวิชาการของนักวิชาการสมัยใหม่ เพื่อเป็นการสร้างแรงบันดาลใจสนับสนุนการทำดีต่อไป จากการศึกษาพบว่า พระเจ้าอโศกมหาราชทรงเปลี่ยนพระทัยมานับถือพระพุทธศาสนาและประกาศพระบรมราชโองการอันเป็นธรรมด้วยเหตุผล 2 ประการ คือ 1) พระองค์ทรงสลดสังเวชกับการตายของทหารและประชาชนในการทำสงครามที่แคว้นกาลิงคะซึ่งพระองค์เป็นต้นเหตุและ 2) การได้สดับตรับฟังพระธรรมเทศนาจากสามเณรนามว่านิโครธในเรื่องความไม่ประมาท อย่างไรก็ตาม นักวิชาการบางคนมองว่า พระองค์อาจมีพระประสงค์จะเปลี่ยนพระทัยมานานแล้วเพราะเหตุว่า พื้นฐานจิตใจของพระองค์ไม่ใช่คนชั่วมาโดยธรรมชาติ เป็นเพราะพระองค์ยังไม่ได้สติและยังมัวเมากับอำนาจ ภายหลังจากที่พระองค์มีสติสำนึกชั่วดีแล้ว พระองค์จึงสร้างคุณานุปโยชน์แก่ชาวโลกอย่างมากมายมหาศาล

Abstract

            This article aimed to search for grounds for mind conversion of Asoka the Great to rule rightly. This study supported the data about causes of his mind conversion based on Buddhist texts, exegesis, sub-exegesis as well as academic works of modern scholars to engage the inspirations to do the good deeds. From studying all of these, it was found that Asoka the Great converted to Buddhism and declared right command with two reasons: 1) he felt so profoundly sorrow and remorse concerning the soldiers and people death in the aggressive war caused by him at Kalinga region, and 2) he listened to Buddhist teaching and the diligence from the novice named Nikrodha. On the other hand, some scholars said that he might have wanted to convert for a long time because his mind is not bad by nature. Perhaps he might feel non conscious to realize what it is and infatuated with his own might. After he had been able to realize what it is, he also gave various values to people.
