Developing Thai Communication Skills of the People in Lertor Royal Project

Abstract

This action research aimed to address Thai language communication problems among the people in the Lertor Royal Project area. The objectives were to investigate existing communication issues, identify the needs for Thai language skill development, and propose an appropriate model for enhancing Thai communication skills. The target groups for this research consisted of adults and elderly individuals who experienced difficulties in speaking and understanding Thai. This research was conducted in two phases: 1) the pre-action research phase, which involved data collection through structured interviews to examine the current issues, needs, and Thai language proficiency among the target group; and 2) the action research phase, implemented in four steps - planning, action, observation, and reflection - to identify a suitable model for improving Thai communication skills. Data were collected through field notes and interviews. The results indicated that adults and elderly participants were unable to speak or understand Thai effectively, primarily because Thai was not used in their daily lives and due to concerns about losing their native language. This language barrier negatively impacted various aspects of their quality of life, including access to public services, receiving information, and social participation. Consequently, the target groups expressed a strong need for practical and contextually appropriate models and media for Thai language skill development. The study found that the “Youth Volunteer Model for Thai Language Communication Skills Development” effectively enhanced the Thai listening and speaking skills of adults and elderly individuals. This model leveraged family resources as its foundation, aligned with the local community context and culture, and promoted continuous learning through real-life situations.
