Development and Finding Efficiency of the Assisted Instruction in Reading English by Integrating the Translation : A Case Study of Students at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University

Abstract

The purposes of the study were to develop the assisted instruction for reading English by integrating the translation in the assisted instruction and find its efficiency. The samples used in the study were 30 students in the second year in the Business English program by simple random sampling. The research tools were the four lessons the assisted instruction based on the basic translation and the four tests of each lesson. The samples were asked to do the pretest before they were taught by using the assisted instruction for 20 hour. During studying, at the end of each lesson, they were asked to do the test. The results of the tests were collected to analyze to find the efficiency of the assisted instruction with the standard criteria of 80/80. When they finished all four lessons, they were asked to do the posttest. The results of the pretest and the posttest were collected to analyze to find their learning achievement.
The results were as follows.
1. According to the results of the four tests during studying,
the mean of the students’ scores was at 64.16 and the effectiveness of the innovation was at 80.21. Therefore, the assisted instruction was effective at 80.21/80 since the standard criteria were at 80/80.2. According to the results of the pretest and posttest, the scores were analyzed by using the t-test dependent. The study found that the means of the pretest and the posttest were different because the posttest was statistically higher than the pretest at the .05 level. This means that the students achieved in learning reading English via the assisted instruction.
