The Mahanatee Seetandon : Music Composition.

Abstract

The work aimed to study a unique identity of local music and to compose
contemporary songs to accompany the music combining the Western music and a local lyre
unique to the province Uon Ratchathani. The work presented an analysis, interpretation,
forms and techniques of composing based on relevant concepts and theories.
The research findings were as follows.
1. Ubon Ratchathani province boasted a wide range of traditions particularly music
and folk performance. The local scholar who specialized in a local stringed music or lyre
was Tongsai Tabthanon, renowned for his versatility in this kind of music.
2. The musical piece under study lasting 9.14 minutes was played by Big Band Jass,
using the rhythm Funk&Samba. The musical piece which was widely popular was
conceptualized in the vastness, depth, rapids, tranquility of the Mekong River. Hence the
song was named Mahanatee Seetandon, which rhymed with Mahanatee Seepandon, in Laos
language meaning the vast Mekong River snaking through numerous isles in southern Laos.
