Abstract

This research aimed to 1) study the democratic citizenship, political participation, and political development in the south of North-eastern Thailand, 2) study the relation between democratic citizenship, political participation, and political development in the south of North-eastern Thailand, and 3) suggest the methods of political development in the south of North-eastern Thailand. The research methodology was mixed research, the integration of quantitative and qualitative research. The subjects of the study were 400

participants who were selected by using Stratified Random Sampling method. The research tool was Linkert scale questionnaire and open-ended questionnaire for expressing opinion and suggestion. Another tool that was used for collecting qualitative data was semi-structured interview. The reliability of the tool used for measuring democratic citizenship was at .703-.845.The reliability of the tool used for measuring political participation was at .708-.867. And the reliability of the tool used for measuring political development was at .716-.737. The reliability of the whole tool was 0.973. The data were analyzed by using statistical analysis including percentage, frequency, mean ( ), standard deviation (S.D.), Pearson’s Correlation, andMultiple Regression.


The results of the study revealed that:


  1. Democratic Citizenship consists of self-responsibility and independence, respect people’s right, respect difference, respect equality, respect rules, and social and public responsibility. Political participation consists of politic interest, election participation, administration participation, and political activity participation such as participate in a protest. Political development consists of freedom, equality, political equality, and legitimacy of law.

  2. Democratic citizenship and political participation were related in moderate level with r=.541. Democratic citizenship and political development were related in moderate level with r=.541. Political participation and political development were related in high level with r=.905. All are related significantly (P<0.01).

  3. There were 9 variables of Democratic citizenship and political participation that resulted in political development significantly (P<0.05) consisting of respect difference, respect equality, respect rules, social and public responsibility, politic interest, election participation, administration participation, and political activity participation such as participate in a protest.
