Abstract

This article aims to 1) examine the role of mobile applications in promoting English vocabulary learning, 2) analyze the advantages and limitations of using applications as learning tools in comparison with traditional rote memorization, and 3) discuss future directions for applying digital technology in English language learning.

The integration of applications into the course EBC23067: English Vocabulary and Expressions for Communication represented a promising approach to enhance the learning of English vocabulary and expressions for effective communication. Various practices were applied, such as assigning students to use Quizlet to study vocabulary in advance, employing Kahoot!, Blooket, Cake, TED Talks, BBC Learning English, and Quizizz for lesson review and formative assessment in the classroom, and using Google Forms as a platform for post-lesson knowledge assessment. In addition, students were encouraged to use Duolingo for practicing vocabulary and expressions outside of class time.

The results of integrating applications into the course EBC23067 highlighted several strengths, including convenient accessibility that allowed learners to study anytime and anywhere, high levels of engagement through interactive features that stimulated motivation, and the promotion of long-term vocabulary retention. Analysis of the concept and application outcomes revealed that the use of applications modernizes the learning process, enhances learning outcomes, and supports learners in confidently applying knowledge in real-life situations. However, one limitation to consider is cost, since some applications were relatively expensive, which may hinder access for certain groups of learners.
