Abstract

This qualitative research article aimed to study the afterlife of General Prem Tinsulanonda as a public figure. The researcher collected data using the concept of cultural memory as a framework in analyzing the life after death of General Prem in various dimensions presented through many different biographical books, and 9 books were employed in this study. It was found that the creation of memories about General Prem in the books reproducing his account reflected about him in 5 main aspects: the first two aspects, 1) being gracious and proud, and 2) being kind to the subordinates, created the memory about him as a soldier, while the other three aspects, 3) being devoted and sacrificing; 4) being loyal and faithful; and 5) being influential and supported by political sections, created the memory about him as a politician. Due to these 5 main aspects, General Prem Tinsulanonda had been viewed and enduringly recognized as a public figure in Thailand even after his death. The results on the creation of his afterlife presented in various forms of media revealed that biographical books especially the ones published afterlife, including memorial ceremonies and farewell speeches, could be utilized as sources to create the afterlife of General Prem, resulting in the revival of his account and long-lasting recognition of him by society as a public figure.
