Development and Trends of Thesis on Thai Language

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study the development and trends of Thesis in Thai Language field. The data was collected from Thailis (Thai Library Integrated System), Office of the Higher Education Commission, from 1946- 2021 which was the current year of research. The researcher selected the data from basic search and define 3 words search, that were, Thai, Dialects, and Linguistics to obtain the results that cover the objectives. Data collection from this database is because it is a database that can search for full documents of theses collected from various universities throughout Thailand, totaling 1,525 subjects. The theses were Classified into different types and count the number to find a simple percentage frequency to show the development and trend of thesis in the Thai language. The findings showed that the theses on Thai language could be divided into 7 groups sorted in descending order as follow: 1) thesis on Thai grammar, 2) thesis on Thai usage, 3) thesis on Thai dialect, 4) thesis on Thai and foreign language comparative, 5) thesis on Thai as a foreign language, 6) thesis on Thai orthography, and 7) thesis on Thai non-verbal language. For the synthesis of theses on Thai language, the result showed aspects for finding the topic, scope, theoretical framework, and the result of the thesis. Moreover, the result indicated the trend in the thesis on Thai language; theses on Thai grammar and the thesis on Thai usage are in the interest of researchers from the past to the present.


Comparing master’s degree and doctoral degree theses, it revealed that the first emphasized the language phenomenon and analyzing for proving theoretical framework. While the latter focused on the thorough proving of hypotheses which were observing factors on influence of the language usage and applying the theoretical framework to expand the explicit knowledge for the work on Thai language.
