The Guidelines for the Transit-Oriented Development of the Salaya Railway Station Enhancing the Educational Urban Context

Abstract

The aims of this research were to study the development of the Salaya sub-district municipality area; and to analyze the significant need towards future changes of its surrounding in educational urban context. The research has proposed the guidelines for transit-oriented development of the Salaya railway station enhancing the urban area to be a learning city. The study integrated both qualitative and survey research. It was divided into 3 parts, including 1 data collection, 2. a focus group in urban architectural students with participatory method, and 3. a questionnaire from the sample around the study area. The results of research found that Salaya was a city with a key role in education and housing. The city has evolved from an agricultural town. The significant needs towards future change have included 1. factors in the development of network connectivity and travel routes 2. factors in enhancing the potential of public spaces and activity areas which promoted activity and public areas, namely learning space, economic area, and social space. According to nature using, the different roles of each neighborhood were necessary for the development in each area. There were potential areas for future development of Salaya, including Salaya railway station, Salaya old-market, Mahidol university, and Tang Sin area. There were main guidelines for transit-oriented development including the improvement for physical appearance and environment, the improvement and promotion for activity and service areas, and the administration of public areas and public services.
