Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) examine the structural formation of mediumship among the Hmong ethnic group; and 2) investigate the social control mechanisms associated with the spiritual beliefs of the Hmong ethnic group. A qualitative methodology employing a phenomenological approach was utilized, with 14 Hmong shamans serving as key informants. Data were analyzed through meaning categorization to derive the essential themes from the informants' accounts. The findings revealed the following:
1. Structural Formation of Hmong Mediumship: The structuralization of Hmong shamanism is rooted in beliefs concerning supernatural beings and ancestral spirits, who select mediums by afflicting their chosen descendants — typically children or grandchildren — with unexplained illnesses that cannot be cured by conventional means. Senior Hmong shamans, however, are able to heal such individuals and initiate them into the role of ancestral spirit mediums. These senior shamans provide guidance and training in healing practices through the invocation of supernatural forces and ancestral veneration. Ritual functions include blessing ceremonies, protection from misfortune, and the interpretation of warnings conveyed through ancestral spiritual signals. Throughout all rituals, the medium maintained full consciousness. The soul-connection ritual, conducted to inquire into the causes of a patient's condition, encompasses three elements: 1) Roop Nimit — a visual image or vision; 2) Nam Nimit — the name or identity of the vision, perceived intuitively; and 3) divination methods. 2. Social Control Among the Hmong Ethnic Group: Social control within Hmong communities operates through the development of biopower and discipline, enacted via self-regulatory mechanisms in which supernatural forces and ancestral spirits are believed to observe and govern human behavior in accordance with established social norms. Key normative practices include: 1) entering natural areas with caution, utilizing natural resources only as necessary, and avoiding waste or destruction of the natural environment; and 2) placing significant importance on the kinship system, including the Sae surname clan and the practice of ancestor worship. Individuals who violate these norms are believed to be judged and punished through unexplained illness. In such cases, the Hmong shaman performs a soul-connection ceremony to identify the cause of the transgression and facilitate atonement, typically involving the sacrifice of animals and the burning of paper gold and silver offerings as acts of seeking forgiveness. Although these rituals, grounded in beliefs in spirits and supernatural powers, cannot be validated through the principles, reasoning, or empirical evidence of contemporary scholarship, the fear of unseen forces that observe and punish human conduct serves as an effective mechanism for maintaining social order and fostering respect for the natural world.
