ศาสนาพุทธและศาสนาเชนไม่ยอมรับคำสอนในคัมภีร์พระเวทในส่วนที่เกี่ยวกับพิธีกรรม ทั้งสองศาสนามีคำสอนที่คัดค้านพิธีกรรมและความเชื่อในเรื่องเทพเจ้า แต่เน้นหนักในเรื่องความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับกฎแห่งกรรม ทั้งสองศาสนายึดหลักแห่งการไม่เบียดเบียนผู้อื่น มีระบบนักบวชและการปกครองในการเผยแผ่ศาสนา มีคำสอนและวิธีการคล้ายกันก็จริง แต่มีความแตกต่างกันในส่วนปลีกย่อย การศึกษาค้นคว้าจากพระไตรปิฎก พบหลักคำสอนที่สำคัญของศาสนาเชนปรากฏอยู่ดังนี้ 1. คำสอนเรื่อง “การเกิดใหม่ 2. คำสอนเรื่อง “ชีวะ” 3. คำสอนเรื่อง “กรรม” 4. คำสอนเรื่อง “ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกรรมและชีวะ” 5.คำสอนเรื่อง “ความหลุดพ้น”
