Enhancement of Knowledge and Building and Environment Assessment Tools to Increase Efficiency of Phuket Old Town Preservation and Development

Abstract

The research aims to create a guideline for improving the image of the city in Phuket Old Town by using quantitative and qualitative research methods (mixed methods). There are three study areas: 1) the core area; 2) the old city area (the core zone); and 3) the buffer zone. The research was conducted using a single data collection and five distinct sampling groups: 1) Phuket Provincial Natural Environment and Arts Conservation Committee; 2) Phuket Old Town Preservation and Development Subcommittee 3) A working team supporting the Phuket Old Town Conservation and Development Subcommittee 4) Thaksin Architects Commission; and 5) Thaksin City Planning Architects Committee, totaling 82 people. The result showed that the efficiency and building and environment assessment tools enhancement for conservation and development of Phuket Old Town include the following five factors: 1) the master plan for land development 2) the roles and responsibilities of the area supervisor 3) the standard criteria for public space, buildings, and architecture 4) the design according to the context of communities, landscapes, places, and climate suitability; and 5) the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage for sustainable community-based tourism.
