THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS OF GRADE FOUR STUDENTS BY THE ROLE PLAY TECHNIQUE

Abstract

           The purpose of this study was to enhance communicative English speaking ability of Primary students by using role play. The sample group was grade four students at Nikhom Sang Ton Eng Prasat 4 School, Phanom Dong Rak District. Surin Province, 18 people, using the experimental period for 4 weeks, 4 hours per week, total 16 hours. The instruments used in this study were eight lesson plans focusing on role play, pre-posttests of communicative English speaking, and students’ self-assessment form. The data were statistically analyzed by mean scores, percentage, standard deviation and t -test for dependent samples.

           The result of this study indicated that: the comparison of students' English speaking skills using role play of grade four students before and after using role play after learning. Not higher than before studying. It can be argued that students' scores after studying were only slightly higher than before studying. Some of them had the same academic results as before. There were 5 students whose development scores after studying decreased. Data from observation found that the students paid little attention to the role-playing stage of the performance and were not serious about communicating in English mixed with Thai words. When their friends watched the performance, they laughed. and stop the show in addition, from the background of the students, their English learning achievement is not quite as high as it should be.
