The Baku pronunciation is the standard of Malayu language. It is an essential factor in Malayu teaching as it indicates the speaker’s language proficiency. YIU students’ Baku pronunciation is non-standard and requires improvement. The problem was examined through Baku pronunciation of vowels and consonants both by Thai-speaking students and Pattani dialect-speaking students. Sound units were also analyzed. It is concluded that the Baku pronunciation problem among YIU students was resulted from the effects of their native language in their daily life. Baku is only applied in typical situations.
