Abstract

This study investigated the communication for conflict management which involves discourse, public sphere, and democracy. This study qualitatively analyzed the representation of the mass media in the form of a television program, namely Policydebate on Thai PBS channel, through multiple methods including textual analysis, content analysis, discourse analysis, documentary research, and the analysis of conflict management in communication. The results indicated that the communication style of the television program demonstrated the democracy in a public sphere, and that the ideas were exchanged rationally in accordance with the rules of the communication. This phenomenon results in mutual understanding and agreement among all parties, and hence a peaceful construction of a common norm in modern society. The process of conflict management through communication depends on the relationship, communication style, and the sensitivity of the content used in the communication. The results also showed that both primary and secondary discourses in the television program signify the contestation of discourses. Importantly, the findings revealed the dynamics in the discourses, and the construction of identity, knowledge and truth, all of which led to the leading power in society.
