Relationship between Falling Intonation and the Purpose of Communication with LINE Stickers in Thai

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present results of an analysis on the relationship between falling intonation and the purpose of communication with LINE stickers in Thai.  The population include 752 stickers from 20 sets of stickers in the category Popular sticker creators backdated from 01 May 2019, and 113 stickers in Thai with falling intonation were selected as samples. They were analyzed based on the concept of suprasegmental on intonation, and the concept of purposes of communication regarding sentence purposes. The study found that falling intonation is the base accent of a declarative sentence which corresponds to the concept of suprasegmental on falling intonation. In other words, 88 stickers or 77.89 percent of the stickers in Thai with falling intonation were stickers that make a statement or to inform.
