Problems of explaining between structure and agency factors: Debates and approaches to explain phenomena in political science
Keywords:
Philosophy of social science, Agency and Structure, Political science Approach, Level of explanationAbstract
Social science phenomena are problematically explained through structural or agency factors perceived as methodological trouble. To resolve this, many thinkers presented dualism explanation as a resolution. However, each concept contains different methods as well as gaps in the explanation of social phenomena. Therefore, to be able to make use of structure and agency concepts to apply to political phenomena, the researcher should be aware of the ontological and epistemological compatibility of the theory or approach. Also, the substances and gaps of each concept should be considered in explaining the relationship and dynamic between structure and agency. Further, consistency of the concept and the political phenomenon is also key in applying each structure and agency concept.
