ยุทธาภิวัตน์กับบทบาทของภริยาผู้ช่วยทูตทหารในการสนับสนุนการทูตเชิงป้องกันของไทย

งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้มุ่งศึกษาและวิเคราะห์บทบาทของภรรยาผู้ช่วยทูตทหารในการสนับสนุนนโยบายการทูตเชิงป้องกันของไทย โดยใช้กรอบแนวคิดการยุทธาภิวัตน์ (militarization) การทำให้เป็นหญิง (feminization) และการทำให้เป็นแม่บ้าน (housewifization) เป็นเครื่องมือในการวิเคราะห์ การศึกษานี้ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพโดยการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกภรรยาผู้ช่วยทูตทหารจำนวน 15 ราย ประกอบกับการวิเคราะห์เอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง วัตถุประสงค์ของการวิจัยคือ (1) สำรวจบทบาทและหน้าที่ของภรรยาผู้ช่วยทูตทหารในกิจกรรมทางการทูตทั้งที่เป็นทางการและไม่เป็นทางการ (2) วิเคราะห์วิธีการที่ภรรยามีส่วนร่วมในการสร้างเครือข่ายทางสังคมและการสนับสนุนการดำเนินงานทางทหาร และ (3) ศึกษาผลกระทบของบทบาทดังกล่าวต่อชีวิตส่วนตัวและครอบครัว
ผลการวิจัยเผยให้เห็นพลวัตที่สำคัญของกระบวนการยุทธาภิวัตน์ในบริบทการทูตเชิงป้องกันของไทย ที่ได้สลายเส้นแบ่งระหว่างพื้นที่ใน การปฏิบัติภารกิจ (พื้นที่สาธารณะ) และครอบครัวหรือชีวิตส่วนตัว (พื้นที่ส่วนตัว) ผ่านกลไกสองประการที่ทำงานร่วมกัน คือ การทำให้เป็นหญิง และ การทำให้เป็นแม่บ้าน กล่าวคือ ในมิติการทำให้เป็นหญิง ภรรยาถูกนำมาใช้ในการส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนอำนาจในการโน้มนำ (soft power) ในการทูตเชิงป้องกันผ่านทักษะทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรมที่ถูกกำหนดว่าเป็นคุณลักษณะของผู้หญิง เช่น การสร้างบรรยากาศที่เป็นมิตร การสื่อสารข้ามวัฒนธรรม และการเป็นทูตวัฒนธรรมในพื้นที่สาธารณะ ขณะเดียวกัน ในมิติการทำให้เป็นแม่บ้าน ภรรยาถูกขยายบทบาทการดูแลจากครอบครัวไปสู่การดูแลกำลังพลหลากหลายกลุ่ม ได้แก่ สามีผู้ช่วยทูตทหาร ข้าราชการที่มาดูงานในต่างประเทศ และนักเรียนทหารแลกเปลี่ยน รวมถึงการจัดการบ้านให้เป็นพื้นที่การทูตไม่เป็นทางการ
