The development of relationship between adolescent and elders in their families in Prongmadeur community
The research and development aimed to develop the relationship between the adolescents and the elders. The sample were a Mayor advisor, a guidance teacher, a community developer, and 17 persons in families which at least 3 generations; an elder, a parent and a grandchild aged 13-19 years old stay together. The questionnaire of demographic data and the relationship between the adolescents and the elders with reliability test by Cronbach’s Alpha at 0.85 were applied to collect data. The data were firstly analyzed by percentage, mean and standard deviation and then were done to compare the relationship between the adolescents and the elders before and after the relationship development process by mean while the qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis.
The research results
1. Most adolescents were male, 52.9%, while the elders were female, 76.5%. There was about half, 52.9% that only one elder stayed in family that most were maternal grandmothers. The 6 single-parent families, the elderly were head of the family, of four families. They could take care of themselves and were perceived as a kind-hearted one so most adolescents, 82.4% feel warm as staying with them. The relationship between the adolescents and the elders after the relationship development process increased score.
2. The pattern of family included 2.1) the elderly family leaders were in poor economic status, 2.2) single-parent families, 2.3) the families at least 3 generations lived together; The relationship pattern were 1) the elders took care of their grandchild since they were young so they developed closed relationship, 2) the adolescents followed the relationship pattern with the elders from their parents, 3) the family activities with all family members participating could enhance a better relationship, 4) the elders felt happy in staying with their family members.
3. The process of relationship development between the adolescents and the elders included planning, training by using intergeneration communication and BHAVANA 4 by giving knowledge for encouraging and understanding of the change in elderly, the development of adolescent, the cooperation in family activities, the reflection on good family’s experiences done together and the continuity in development.
