The Semiological Value of Making a Votive Offering Belief of Thai Buddhists in Phra Buddhasothorn with the Buddhist Philosophical Perspective

Abstract

The objectives of this research paper were to: 1) study the semiotic concepts of the belief of vows of Thai Buddhists towards Phra Buddhasothon; 2) study the Buddhist philosophy on the beliefs of Buddhists; 3) analyze and assess the semiological value of the vows of Thai Buddhists towards Phra Buddhasothon according to Buddhist philosophy; 4) create a new body of knowledge and a semiological value model of the rebellious beliefs of Thai Buddhists according to the Buddhist philosophy. This is a qualitative research by means of collecting data from research documents together with indiscriminating observation to analyze, appreciate and apply to leading the creation of new knowledge in philosophy and Buddhism.

            The results showed that the belief of Thai Buddhists' repentance towards Phra Buddhasothon is not contrary to the Buddhist doctrine in the minor part. But overall, it is inconsistent with the principles of Buddhism because Buddhism does not reject the power of miracles, but it insists that there is a miracle that can inspire success for people. Just pointed out that the powers of miracles are not a noble way of relying on them because they do not lead to the cessation of suffering in the world. But when examining the facts in the vow ceremony, it was found that those who come to the house are only on the frame of mundane level. There is no one who asks in the supramundane one. So, that shows that Buddhists have a good understanding of this matter with knowing that those things could not be accomplished by swaying. Because it is something that must be done by yourself in order to adhere to the principles of Buddhist philosophy. In this research, it is proposed that the Buddhist cultural code be replaced by the cultural code of ghost and Brahmin religions in order to create a new meaning in the signs in order to be used in the ritual of vows to become the correct belief according to Buddhist philosophy that is right for those who come to revise the Phra Buddhasothon next.
