Security Issues with the Development of Special Economic Zones Case Studies Area, Muang District, Mukdahan Province

Abstract

The research aims to investigate security issues and obstacles that impact the development of special economic zones in the Mueang District of Mukdahan Province. This qualitative study employs in-depth interviews using random sampling with 18 key informants consisting of representatives from local administrative organizations, provincial and district administrations, local police officers, local people, and ship units maintaining peace and order in the Mekong River region. The study revealed five major security problems affecting the development of special economic zones in the area, which include disease epidemics along the border, illegal immigration smuggling, drug problems, transnational crime, and natural resource and environmental problems. These issues indirectly hindered the development process of special economic zones, with drug and illegal immigration smuggling being significant obstacles. The overlapping security and administrative authority of agencies in the area contributed to this problem, as they did not perform the same tasks. Consequently, these security issues impeded the development process and prevent departments responsible for security, the provincial government, local people, and local government organizations from working collaboratively, resulting in reduced efficiency. Overall, the findings highlight the need for addressing security issues and obstacles related to the development of special economic zones in the Mueang District of Mukdahan Province. There is a crucial need for coordinated efforts from various agencies and organizations to ensure efficient development in the area.
