Chandas in Sanskrit Inscriptions of King Jayavarman VII

Abstract

There are many different Chandas in Sanskrit inscriptions of king Jayavarman VII which are interesting and valuable. This article’s purpose poited to Chandas in Ta Prohm inscription, Phra Khan inscription, Phimeanakas inscription and Prasat Chrung inscription.  These Inscriptions can be divided into 3 groups as follows: (1) Chandas with many syllables. (2) Chandas with Organized knowledge system and summarizing the story. (3) Chandas emphasized the description of the content.   A result after studying found that Various types of Chandas shown the ability of the poet in two dimension. The first dimension, the poet created Chandas which appropreating for feeling and rasa of literature. The second dimension, Chandas reflected the thoughts of the poet’s thought who honored  the great King Jayavarman VII. Therefore reading the Sanskrit inscriptions of King Jayavarman VII. It’s purpose for understanding deeply could not leave Chandas.
