ความสัมพันธ์ทางวัฒนธรรมระหว่างรัฐโอริสสากับประเทศไทย: ศึกษาจากหลักฐานทางโบราณคดี

เป็นที่ทราบกันโดยทั่วไปว่าอารยธรรมอินเดียได้เข้ามามีบทบาทสำคัญในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ซึ่งรวมถึงดินแดนที่เป็นประเทศไทยในปัจจุบันดังจะเห็นได้จากแบบแผนการดำเนินชีวิตโดยเฉพาะการนับถือศาสนานอกจากนี้ยังได้พบโบราณวัตถุหรือหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีอีกเป็นจำนวนมากที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงร่องรอยการติดต่อกับอินเดียจากภูมิภาคต่างๆทั้งภาคใต้ภาคเหนือภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือและภาคตะวันตกทั้งนี้รัฐโบราณสมัยประวัติศาสตร์ตอนต้นในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้คงมีการติดต่อกับอินเดียภาคตะวันออกคือบริเวณรัฐโอริสสาในปัจจุบันด้วยแต่ก็ยังไม่เคยมีการศึกษาทางด้านโบราณคดี อย่างจริงจังถึงรูปแบบความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าว
ผลจากการวิจัยครั้งนี้สรุปได้ว่ามีหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีทางประเภทที่พบในประเทศไทยซึ่งมีลักษณะบางประการคล้ายกับที่พบในรัฐโอริสสาโดยเฉพาะหลักฐานประเภทตราประทับหรือตราดินเผาเหรียญลูกปัดและภาชนะดินเผาหลักฐานเหล่านี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าการติดต่อนั้นน่าจะเกิดขึ้นจากกิจกรรมการค้าขายทางทะเลระหว่าง 2 ภูมิภาคเป็นหลักดังนั้นการติดต่อสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าวจึงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเครือข่ายการค้าสมัยโบราณที่เชื่อมโยงระหว่างประเทศอินเดียอาณาจักรโรมันประเทศจีนและภูมิภาคเอเชีย ตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
