“มรดกเพิ่งสร้าง”: เมืองและย่านประวัติศาสตร์ในมะละกาและปีนัง

เมืองมะละกาและเมืองจอร์จทาวน์ได้รับการประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนมรดกโลกค.ศ. 2008 แต่ภายใต้การขึ้นทะเบียนมรดกโลกดังกล่าว ผู้เขียนพบความน่าสนใจหลายประการของการเคลื่อนไหวในกระบวนการสร้างมรดกในมะละกาและปีนัง ทั้งองค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่นและกลุ่มพัฒนาเอกชนต่างๆอยู่ในสนามของนิยามมรดกวัฒนธรรมและการอนุรักษ์บททบทวนวรรณกรรมนี้ชวนให้ตั้งคำถามเกี่ยวกับ“ความเป็นมรดก”กระบวนการสร้างมรดกนับเป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นเพื่อสนองตอบต่อความต้องการของสังคมในปัจจุบันและมิใช่การสืบทอดประเพณีหรือการรับช่วงมรดกจากบรรพชน ผู้เขียนหยิบยกตัวอย่างต่างๆที่บอกเล่าถึงกระบวนการสร้างมรดกวัฒนธรรมในเมืองประวัติศาสตร์อย่างมะละกาและปีนัง ประเทศมาเลเซีย
