อิทธิพลของภาษาต่อความคิด: ความแตกต่างระหว่างภาษาไทยกับภาษาญี่ปุ่น

ภาษากับปริชานหรือความคิดมีความสัมพันธ์กันอย่างแนบแน่น ตามสมมติฐานภาษาสัมพัทธ์กล่าวว่าภาษามีอิทธิพลต่อความคิดของผู้พูดภาษา ดังนั้นผู้ที่พูดภาษาแตกต่างกันย่อมมีความคิดแตกต่างกัน ในทางกลับกันผู้ที่พูดภาษาคล้ายคลึงกันก็ย่อมมีความคิดคล้ายคลึงกันไปด้วย บทความวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างภาษากับความคิดเรื่อง “เวลา” ของผู้พูดภาษาญี่ปุ่นและผู้พูดภาษาไทย ภาษาญี่ปุ่นเป็นภาษาที่มีหน่วยคำสำหรับระบุกาล แต่ภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาไม่มีหน่วยคำสำหรับระบุกาล หากภาษามีอิทธิพลต่อความคิด ระบบกาลจะส่งผลให้ผู้พูดภาษาญี่ปุ่นตระหนักเรื่องเวลามากกว่าผู้พูดภาษาไทย ผลการวิจัยพบว่าผู้พูดภาษาญี่ปุ่นใส่ใจเวลามากกว่าและจดจำเวลาได้ดีกว่าผู้พูดภาษาไทย ในขณะที่ผู้พูดภาษาไทยไม่ตระหนักเรื่องเวลา
