Samantakutavannana: Analysis an Issue on Sri Lankan’s Cult

Abstract
The objectives of this academic article are to study the essence of Samantakūṭavaṇṇanā and to analyze the issue of the cult of Sri Lankan people. The results of the study show that this work focuses on the Buddha’s activity, from the time of his enlightenment until he came to the island of Lanka. Moreover, this work also adds to the story of God Sumana as the custodian of the Samantakūṭa Mountain, the event of enshrining the Buddha's footprint, the cult of sacred sites around the island as a representative of the Buddha, and the cult of Hindu gods. Such a Hindu god who is very famous is Upunval (sometime later called Visnu). Vedeha, the author of Samantakūṭavaṇṇanā, considers the influence of God Visnu. He fears if this cult infiltrates into Buddhist’s ritual, it will be difficult to solve. Therefore, he decides to write this work for eulogizing the Buddha’s footprint on the Samantakūṭa Mountain as a sacred site of Sri Lanka and extolls God Sumana as the custodian of the Buddha’s footprint.
